"Did this story make my spirit soar as I read it? Yes, yes it did; to the point of wiping away tears."
—Frank Gosnell, featured in The Memory Songbook, is home for the holidays, but feeling low. As Christmas closes in he's not celebrating but counting his loses -- his girlfriend left him for another guy, and his singer-songwriter career is ... well, the year didn't go quite as well as he had hoped.
But something special is about to happen in a warm neighborhood pub, on a snowy December night.
Ray Keene is smiling when he meets Frank for a pitcher of beer, but he too has some challenges. His wife is pregnant with their first child, money is short, and for years he has secretly nurtured a creative venture that he believes will lift the two young men into a grand, new orbit — if only he can convince Frank to accept a precious one-of-a-kind gift

It's six a.m. and I'm awake. I'm perusing lists of free books at Amazon when I come across this short story written by Douglas Glenn Clark, author of The Memory Songbook. My eyes light up and my heart quickens in anticipation as I read the description and see that this short tale involves Frank Gosnell as well as other characters from The Memory Songbook. Like a kid, I make my purchase and remain in bed to enjoy my prize. Was it worth it? You bet it was. Was it well written? Absolutely. Did it make my spirit soar as I read it? Yes, yes it did; to the point of wiping away tears. What the hell is it with this author and his books which, for the most part, affect me so viscerally and intellectually? Perhaps it is tied to how and when I began to read this author's work. Perhaps it is my love of music or the fact that I enjoy playing guitar and singing; maybe it's like I have found a kindred spirit. Or...perhaps it is the gift of JOY, the heartfelt gladness which envelops me when I read these books, these delicious slices of life. Regardless, the holiday season is upon us; yet, as I lie here writing this review, I feel a sense of afterglow...and it feels damn good.My thanks to the author for his "gifts", namely his writing and the things he has written. I eagerly await his next offering.
I give this one five beautiful holiday stars!

The Christmas Guitar Songbook A classic holiday story for musicians songwriters friends and family edition by Douglas Glenn Clark Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Like the other reviewers, I have read this author's other offerings on - “The Lake That Stole Children”, “The Cancer Assassin,” “Little R-E-D Dress,” and “A Short Commute" and I enjoyed them all. However, "The Memory Songbook" is the one that really sold me on his abilities as a writer. Perhaps it is partially due to my personal leaning to science fiction/fantasy stories, perhaps it was because I am a former Midwesterner and recognized the lay of the land as described by the author, or maybe it is related to the fact that I am of an age when I am dealing with aging parents, or very possibly it was just that the story had a lot of heart and soul and it reached out and connected with me.
In terms of "The Christmas Guitar Songbook", the author continues on his upward arc in finding ways to appeal to and hold his readers. My only negative comment is that I felt cheated that the story was so short; such a tease! I want to hear more about Frank Gosnell, his beautiful new guitar, and where he goes from there. Bring it on, Mr. Clark!
The Memory Songbook, The Sideman Songbook, The X-Me-Out Songbook--all well written and stories that touch me in a way I find hard to describe. This story is no exception. Keep them coming!
This was good, but as a short story, it had a lot of information jammed into a few pages. I liked it, but I liked the first chapter of another book, included as a teaser, even better.
I really like this writer. Douglas Clark’s “The Lake That Stole Children” was the first story I read from his collection. That was two years ago. It was full of magic and powerful imagery. Beautifully told. After “The Lake” I read “The Cancer Assassin,” “Little R-E-D Dress,” and “A Short Commute.” The stories are all very different yet they display a remarkable talent for description, insight and originality. And as much as I enjoyed all of them, it wasn’t until I read “The Memory Songbook,” that I was totally hooked. In the story, songwriter Frank Gosnell’s difficult personal journey reveals a complex and completely authentic person. I like how Clark draws a portrait of an artist at a critical stage of his creative life, fearful that his chance at realizing his dreams of success may have slipped beyond his grasp, while at the same time, dealing with the reality of his mother’s dementia and revisiting his childhood with his eccentric grandfather, “Gramp Sam.” Clark’s gifts of self-reflection and observation as a writer really impressed me. The account of Frank Gosnell’s teenage life in Hanley was rich in detail and powerfully evoked a nostalgic look-back at a classic slice of Americana. “The Sideman Songbook” is also a wonderful story. Luther, Rooney, Karrine and Frank Gosnell are great characters and the scene in Marshall Music was reminiscent of a good play.
And now I’ve just finished “The Christmas Guitar Songbook,” my favorite. The scene in the Jolly Fiddler bar with Frank Gosnell and his old friend Ray is fantastic and is bound to appeal to every reader, especially anyone who ever picked up a guitar or wrote a song. They say a writer should write what he knows. It’s clear that Clark knows a lot about guitars, songwriters and people. I loved, for example, how Frank reacts to the mysterious new guitar that Ray gives him "The songwriter gingerly pulled the guitar to his lap and moved his left hand up and down the neck, forming chord shapes and testing the action. When he finally strummed he was immediately overcome the sound was like the aroma of fine food; it filled the senses with a bass that was rich for a smallish instrument, mellow middle tones and a high-end sweetness that jangled in perfect pitch. “
Wow. The character of Frank Gosnell is a great invention and the “Memory Songbook” is such a fresh idea. I eagerly look forward to the next installment. Congratulations to a first-class writer.
